  3. ~L~~SB~What is a PICT File?:~SB~

  5. A PICT file is usually described as a MacDraw type PICT file.  There are two possible formats to this file.  The older one is known as PICT 1 which cannot contain pix maps.  The other format is the newer PICT 2 which is able to handle the extensions provided by color QuickDraw.

  7. ~SB~Opening PICT Files:~SB~

If color QuickDraw is present PICT files will be opened according to the PICT preferences set.  If color QuickDraw is not present type 2 PICT files cannot be opened by Macintoshes running system versions older than 4.1.  Even with later system versions type 2 PICT files may not open as desired on Macintoshes without color QuickDraw because they will be loaded as one bit deep images regardless of what color they might have contained.

PICT files created by saving the bit map image will always be type 1 PICT files.  On the other hand, PICT files created by saving the pix map image will always be type 2 PICT files with one exception.  If you are running Vision Lab on a Macintosh that does not have color QuickDraw and are saving a 1 bit deep image from the pix map, this image will be saved as a type 1 PICT.  In general, however, you will not be able to save type 2 PICT files from Macintoshes not equipped with color QuickDraw.

This menu item ~SU~only~SU~ functions on a Macintosh equipped with color QuickDraw.  If ~SB~Try to get clut from PICT first~SB~ is checked then type 2 PICT files will be scanned before being loaded.  With this option checked the pix map╒s color environment will be based on the pix map of the greatest depth within the PICT file.  If no pix map is found within the PICT file then the PICT will be loaded in black and white ~SU~only~SU~.  Bypassing this ╥smart╙ clut feature and selecting different color environments to load the PICT files into can produce some very interesting results.

  23. PICT Files can be opened by nearly all Macintosh graphics programs including page make up programs.  Because the PICT format is a part of QuickDraw itself these files will open and save ~SU~very~SU~ quickly.

  27. PICT files that contain color information can be very large.  PICT files can use twice the memory needed to display the image when being opened and saved.

  31. PICTs are saved using 30K CopyBits chunks.  This means that the PICTs created by Vision Lab should not be used on machines with the 64K ROMs.
